I wanted space, distance, history and danger, and I was interested in the living world...

—Freya Stark, explorer and writer, 1893-1993

     ABOUT

I am a product of Dartmouth College, the John F. Kennedy School for Special Warfare, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and six decades of curiosity and exploration. I write from my experience and of my era.
After graduation from Dartmouth in 1968, I was proud to serve twenty-one adventurous years in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer, Military Intelligence, and Special Forces officer. I retired in the rank of lieutenant colonel after overseas service in Vietnam, Thailand, and Germany.

I was equally fortunate to represent the United States in three whitewater canoe and kayak world championships and in the 1972 Olympics at Munich. Following competition, I mounted expeditions in Bhutan, Pakistan, Mexico, and elsewhere, including to the Tsangpo River of Tibet that is the subject of my book Courting the Diamond Sow, and also the concluding chapter of my current book project, Torrents As Yet Unknown: Exploring Earth's Great River Gorges. I am honored to be a National Geographic Explorer and Author, and a Fellow of The Explorers Club.

I presently live and write in the Blue Ridge of Southwestern Virginia.
